Captain's Negligence Forces Ship to Run Aground
23 / 01 / 07
M/V NIJORD, a Maltese-flagged cargo ship ran aground in the Latvian northwest coast in fine clear weather during her voyage from France to Riga, Latvia’s capital. From investigations carried out by the Latvian authorities, it resulted that the captain including five crew members, out of the nine on board, were under the influence of alcohol. The captain’s condition was confirmed by breathalyser tests and thereafter by blood samples tests. It was established that the captain’s level of alcohol was more than two times as much as the limit for driving. It is understood that these tests were undertaken due to the fact that the crew members did not observe the warnings sent to the wheel-house of the captain in order to change course. None of the crew members were injured although a small amount of oil leaked from the mentioned vessel.
This was the second cargo-ship within a week that ran aground in the Latvian waters after the M/V GOLDEN SKY, registered under the Cypriot Flag, ran aground due to adverse weather conditions.
