The Malta Maritime Authority is closely monitoring the attack of the Maltese-registered vessel “Centauri” which was seized by pirates off southern Somalia while she was on her way to Kenya. The vessel, owned by Greek interests, was taken yesterday at 0230 Hrs and was expected to call at Mombasa to discharge 17,000 tons of bulk salt tomorrow. She is believed to be carrying 25 Filipino crew members who are reported to be unharmed.

The Centauri was reported to be sailing towards Eyl, a lawless former fishing outpost on the Somali coast where gangs are holding several ships for ransom.

Another vessel, the “Great Creation”, registered in Hong Kong and owned by Hong Kong’s Sinotrans was also seized early today. She was crossing from India to Tunisia and was also carrying 25 sailors almost all of Chinese nationality.

Heavily-armed pirates have hijacked more that 30 vessels off Somalia this year, making its waters the most dangerous in the world. Latest reports show that Somali pirates are presently holding 13 vessels and 200 seamen.

The media reported that security forces have yesterday clashed with pirates in Putland region in northern Somalia where most of the gangs are based. Several pirates have been injured and others arrested.
