It was reported that the Malta Maritime Authority’s inspectors may only inspect the vessel once the Russians have finalized their investigation. The Malta Maritime Authority intends to carry out an inspection to determine vessel’s seaworthiness.

The owners are eager to have the investigations over in order to fulfill their obligations to deliver the cargo to its final destination.  They however are being left in the dark as to when this probe will be finalized.

The ARCTIC SEA was officially carrying timber from Finland to Algeria when she was allegedly hijacked in Swedish waters at the end of July. The ship was traced by the Russian navy in the Atlantic Ocean mid August. Military sources in Israel and Russia were cited by the international press as saying that the vessel was loaded with missiles headed to be delivered to Iran.  However such reports have so far been denied.
