For the fourth consecutive year and for the fifth time Malta has again been elected on the Council of the International Maritime Organisation.  The election was held on the 25th November 2005 at the IMO headquarters in London.

This result is a prestigious one for Malta due to the fact that it confirms that our island enjoys the respect and trust of the international maritime community in this sector.

The Minister for Maritime Affairs Hon Censu Galea, who earlier last week addressed the assembly, thanked all those who have worked to enable Malta to retain its position on the council.

The Minister augured that Malta maintains its active role in this council at a time when the organization is working to ensure greater security and efficiency in the sector of transport by sea which is responsible for the carriage of 90% of the world’s merchandise.

The Minister concluded by renewing the Government’s promise that the Malta Maritime Authority should carry on to strengthen its operations in the mercantile sector so that Malta’s esteem will continue to flourish in the Maritime industry.
