The Malta Maritime Authority is investigating a minor fuel spill involving the Malta-flagged vessel JIMILTA II in the Mississippi River, US, last weekend. The vessel sustained a minor fuel tank overflow while bunkering operations were being carried out. The result caused the polluting of the deck and a small pollution in the Mississippi River, West New Orleans where she was berthed.

The master immediately took the necessary precautions and initiated the required procedures to avoid further contamination on deck and river through spillage. The flag state, amongst other parties, was immediately informed.

The US Coast Guard investigated the matter and the technical team concluded that approximately ten barrels were spilled on deck and about five barrels in the river. Therefore this was considered as a minor impact and the vessel was released after clean-up operations were completed although a fine was imposed.
