During an interview with IHS Maritime last week, Malta’s Registrar General of the Ship Registry, Ivan Sammut, voiced his opinions on how the EC's tonnage tax ruling will impact all Member States and not just Malta.  Mr Sammut expressed his concern as to how any European Commission’s interference in Malta’s tonnage tax regime, with respect to EU’s investigation set up in July 2012, will ultimately affect the entire European maritime cluster as any changes levied by the European Commission will also need to be implemented by other European Member States. He added that in order to protect the common interest, all the positions adopted by the Maltese flag administration during the investigation were done so following consultation with shipping industry stakeholders. Malta’s Registrar General of the Shipping Registry feels that the cooperation went well throughout the ongoing procedures and predicts that the EC’s ruling can be expected sooner rather than later.
