Casualty Involving Maltese Registered Vessel MV Aurelia

The Merchant Shipping Directorate of the Malta Maritime Authority is investigating the marine casualty involving the Maltese registered ship MV Aurelia reported to have foundered late yesterday evening at about 300 nautical miles south of Japan. The vessel was manned by 22 Ukrainian nationals.

 

According to the latest information provided by the Japanese coast guard, 6 crewmembers are missing while the remaining 16 have been rescued. Coast guard units are still in the area conducting a search in the hope of finding the missing crewmembers.

 

The 22,000gt vessel was carrying 33,000 tons of zinc ore from Callao, Peru on its way to various discharge ports in Japan, Korea and China.

 

The Merchant Shipping Directorate of the Malta Maritime Authority is closely monitoring the situation and is liaising with local authorities in the investigation into the causes leading to this loss.
