Pawlina Joins Tug Malta Fleet
04 / 10 / 06
On Thursday 6th April 2006, the Tug Malta fleet saw the introduction of the newly built motor tug named ‘Pawlina’, which was launched at Pinto Wharf in Valletta by the Director of Tug Malta, Ms Carmen Psaila and blessed by the Archpriest of St. Paul’s Shipwreck church in Valletta, Canon Alfred Camilleri.
Pawlina is considered as one of the most powerful tugboats both in the Mediterranean and European ports. Tug Malta declared that this power could increase efficiency in terminals. This new tug includes two Caterpillar engines which have a total power of 4,600 brake horse power (equivalent to 4,180 KW) hence a bollard pull of 68 tonnes.
Lloyd’s Register has classed Pawlina as an escort and fire-fighting tug, Class 1 due to its high-technology equipment. She is furnished with a double drum winch at the bow together with two fire-fighting pumps and monitors.
Present at the inauguration ceremony was the Minister of Investments, Dr. Austin Gatt, who praised the work carried out by the board of directors and the workers. Gatt highlighted the fact that this investment was done without the need of government support. He emphasized that Tug Malta presents an essential service to the local ports and thus to Malta’s economy
