Malta on the White-List of the Paris MOU

Malta has officially entered the white-list of flags maintained by the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control.  This was announced today by the Minister for Competitiveness and Communications, the Hon. Mr Censu Galea, during the graduation ceremony held at the International Maritime Law Institute.

This is a great achievement considering that up to twelve months ago Malta was on the black-list. In May 2006, Malta managed to advance to the grey-list. Now, ,just one year later, the concerted efforts made by the Merchant Shipping Directorate and all other related parties, particularly the owners and managers of the vessels carrying the Malta Flag, have resulted in an upgrade to the white-list. This augurs well for the Malta Maritime Authority, the ship owners and all connected with Malta Flag.

“Malta is now no longer a targeted flag! This is tremendously good news for all our clients who have placed their trust in our services and advice. It is also an even greater attraction to all well meaning ship-owners who in the past were perhaps hesitant regarding Malta’s integrity.  They now have every reason to manage and operate their vessels under the Malta Flag”, said John A. Gauci-Maistre, Chairman of GM International Services Ltd, when asked what his reaction was to this news. “We have always insisted with our clients that it is in the owners and managers best interest to maintain a level that would conform to International standards. But every endeavor must be made through constant vigilance to retain this extremely welcome new position.” he further added.
